Peggy Guggenheim

Peggy Guggenheim

Unfairly known as the mistress of modernism, Peggy Guggenheim was an art collector and gallery owner that broke the likes of Jackson Pollock. Her interiors (and her accessories) were as impeccable as her collection of art.

Margaret Bourke-White

Margaret Bourke-White

New Yorker, photographer, photojournalist, cat lover.

We stumbled across Margaret when looking into Julia Margaret Cameron's work off the back of Britain in Focus, a great BBC three part series on photography (which you can still watch here http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08h95c3).

Margaret Bourke-White was the first female war photojournalist and first foreign photographer allowed to take pictures of Soviet industry.  She also got the cover shot and story for issue one of LIFE magazine.

Her assignments in Germany, Soviet Union and the Dust Bowl meant her style developed from big bold industrial and architectural images, to the inclusion of people. As her understanding of the social issues developed, as did her compassionate humanitarian approach to such photos.

SHOP SOUNDS

SHOP SOUNDS

We're very pleased to announce that our next Shop Sounds mix will be from the  talented young man behind Be With Records, Rob Butler.  But before that, there's this....

We love Ahmad Jamal here at shop so it was quite literally music to our ears when we heard that Be With Records were re-releasing his iconic masterpiece The Awakening.

Full press release can be found here...

There will also be a release party held at the awesome Spiritland in Kings cross, tomorrow night!  So you can hear it in all it's glory on quite possibly the best sound system known to man.

Anna-Lülja Praun

Anna-Lülja Praun

Born on the 29th May 1906, Ann-Lülja was one of the first women to study architecture in Austria making here a pioneer in her field.

Don't know much about Anna-Lülja and can't seem to find much.  What we did come across though, was this great article documenting her home.

Vanessa Bell

Vanessa Bell

A glimpse at the work of English artist and interior designer Vanessa Bell (1879-1961)

Initially influenced by the post-Impressionist exhibitions organised by Roger Fry, in 1914 Bell moved on to Abstraction.  She is now now one of the most celebrated painters of the Bloomsbury Group.  The groups first ever meetings actually took place in Bell's house in Gordon Square.

Here are some paintings, including a portrait of her sister Virginia Woolf (below) and some photographs of the home she designed with long time collaborator Duncan Grant.
