A truly excellent piece by an unknown artist from mid-20th-century France. It features layered applications of paint, with marks made using palette knives and other tools. The composition gradually loses its pattern and form toward the base, where the oil has been worked repeatedly into a loose, heavily textured surface. It has a wonderful sense of age, and we would date it to around the 1940s–50s.
