Mounted Kuba Cloth Panel
A very large piece of Kuba cloth from the Congo in Central Africa. Wonderfully expressive, the embroidery is stitched onto handwoven raffia cloth. Often geometric and symbolic, the meanings and origins of this textile style remain largely unknown, with theories ranging from representations of crop patterns to divine inspiration. This piece would likely have originally been used as a dance skirt. The previous owner has mounted it on a board and presented it in an artist’s frame.
